February Teen Events @ Jan Platt Regional Library (South Tampa)

Hi! I’m John and I’m a new Librarian at the Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library in South Tampa. I'm writing today to tell you about our programs for teens (middle & high-school) at the library this month (February, 2011). We just started a new Teen Advisory Board (aka TAB)!!! Our next TAB meeting is on Saturday February 26th at 3pm. Have ideas for teen events and clubs at the library? Bring them to share! Enjoy snacks, laughter and fun while planning events and creating videos, podcasts, photos and more. TAB members also earn community service hours toward graduation, scholarships and more! We will be hanging out and discussing the first book in the Ranger's Apprentice series : The Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan. "When fifteen-year-old Will is rejected by battleschool, he becomes the reluctant apprentice to the mysterious Ranger Halt, and winds up protecting the kingdom from danger." Check out a copy today! New Teen Events @ Jan Platt Regional Library (South Tampa)

I’m John and I’m a Teen Librarian just starting at the Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library in South Tampa. I’m very excited about some new events and clubs that will be starting in January:

Directly after the first meeting of our new TAB group, we will have the first meeting of our Teen Book Club (pick up your copy today @ Jan Platt Library !) We will be hanging out and discussing the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.

When making your suggestions, keep these criteria in mind:

1. Must be available for the PlayStation 2.


2. Must be rated E, E10 or T. (I know... Halo’s fun, but no M, means no M. Sorry, guys!)


3. Must allow at least 2 players to play, preferably 4 players with the Multitap.


4. Positive reviews (of the content) in Common Sense Media and gaming websites are a plus! (It helps me demonstrate to my bosses that the games you guys want are ok!)

GRAND TOURNEY RESULTS

How was the Grand Tourney at MOSI, you ask? EXCELLENT!



We estimate that almost 250 people came... some to play, some to hang out and watch, some just to check out all the commotion.
We started the day by selecting 4 wildcard players to join the 12 pre-qualified regional winners in each Grand Tournament. We ran double-elimination tournaments, playing one random song per match, until we ran our 16 contestants down to the top 2, who headed to the Finals.

The Finals were Best 2 of 3. As the undefeated player, Johnny AK got the pick the 1st song, Raining Blood, which he won. As the challenger, The Raw, selected Number of the Beast as the 2nd song, which he also won. This brought us to a nailbiter of tiebreaker, selected by the judges... Metallica's One. And the winner... The Raw!


In the DDR SN2 Finals: maxninja and Matt -->

The Finals were also Best 2 of 3. The undefeated maxninja selected Volcano as the 1st song, which he won. Matt, the challenger, picked next: Calico Cat Rock, which he also won. As the tiebreaker, the judges picked Wind it Up. And the winner... Matt!


As the 1st Place winners of the Grand Tournament, Matt and The Raw each took home Rock Band! Johnny AK and maxninja each received a (PRODUCT) RED iPod Shuffle. (Our thanks to everybody who voted in our poll for helping to choose the prizes!)

This weekend at the Brandon Regional Library, we named the winners of the third Qualifier event for the Teen Game Tournament!

Each competitor played the same 2 songs (selected at random), and the 2 with the highest total scores won a seat in the Grand Tournament at MOSI on March 1, and prize packs filled with library goodies and gifts from local sponsors, including Greenshift Music & Comics, Wendy's, Moe's, Checkers, Moe's, Arby's, Quizono's, Chik-Fil-A and more.

Get ready for Teen Tech Week 2008!

To celebrate Teen Tech Week 2008, the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative is hosting a Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution gaming tournament for teens on Saturday, March 1, 2008.

Want to play? Enter one of the qualifying events hosted at seven Hillsborough County libraries, February 2 - 25 to win a prize pack and an invitation to play in the Grand Tournament (sponsored by Red Octane) on March 1, at MOSI.
