Read 'em now: Teens' Top Ten nominations!




Did you know that today is Support Teen Literature Day? Well, it is! Do your part by helping YALSA select books for the Teens' Top Ten List. Click here to see a list of the 25 nominated titles. Read them this summer, and then vote for your favorites during Teen Read Week in October. By the way, I highly recommend the short story collection ZOMBIES VS. UNICORNS. You may be surprised who wins. Just sayin'.

Tweet, write, and WIN.

Want to win $50 for Amazon.com and/or a Nook eReader? Check out this contest for creative teens from the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) and Figment.com!

Part One:

  • Come up with a Steampunk device or instrument and give it a name and a description of what it looks like. For example, “Blimflocket – a wristwatch with a chain that goes up the arm and links to a person’s neck.”
  • On March 7 tweet this invention along with the hashtag #YALSApunk and @figmentfiction. A winning device will be chosen based on creativity, and the inventor will receive a $50 Amazon gift card!
  • On March 8, the winning device will be announced on the Figment and YALSA sites and by Twitter.

Part Two:
  • For the second part of the contest, write a short story (750 words or fewer) on Figment (sign up here!) in which the winning device from the first round gets used. Submissions will be accepted March 8-11.
  • Figment users will vote to select finalists the week of March 14. National Book Award winning-author, Kathryn Erskine, will choose a winning story.
  • The winner will be announced the week of March 21 and will receive a Nook e-reader!

Voting is open now through September 17. The winners will be announced during Teen Read Week, Oct. 17-23.

The Teens’ Top Ten is a reading list chosen entirely by and for teens. Last year, more than 11,000 teens voted for the Teens’ Top Ten, choosing Paper Towns by John Green as their favorite title.

Got a favorite that you'd like to nominate?  It has to have been published no earlier than September 31, 2009 AND can't be on last year's list.  It's also got to be suitable for readers ages 12-18.

It's almost Teen Read Week... get ready to vote!

Teens' Top Ten is a "teen choice" list, where teens nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year! Nominators are members of teen book groups in fifteen school and public libraries around the country.
If you read nominated books throughout the year, you’ll be ready to vote for your favorites during Teen Read Week, October 12 - 18, 2008. Readers aged twelve to eighteen can vote right here, online, anytime that week.
