Outstanding Teen Volunteers!

The Teen Advisory Board makes a tremendous difference at the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library, and few outstanding members were recently recognized by the Library Board for their dedicated service. On September 27, the Library Board presented a Certificate of Commendation from the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners and a pin for Volunteer Excellence to five members of the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library T.A.B., recognizing each for completing 100 or more hours of service to the library.

Rita M. receives a Certificate of Commendation for 100+ hours of volunteer service.
Stephanie A., Cydney B., Rita M., Clarissa N., and Wes S. have each gone above and beyond in service to the library and its community, not only participating in T.A.B. projects, but also helping with programs for children and adults and volunteering for special projects with staff.

Ms. Janet and I (and Ms. Annamae too!) are proud of each and every one of them, and we’re thankful to the Library Board for helping express the appreciation that we feel for the support that these special young people have provided to us, our library and our community. Congrats!

A Hauntingly Good Time!

Are you ready for a ghoulishly good October? The teens at JBK certainly are after last week’s hands-on workshop for teens, Special FX.  TAB member David F. led this unique and incredibly fun event, sharing tricks of the trade from his favorite hobby, special effects makeup. Almost 20 teens (and a few daring adults) learned the basics to creating burns, bites, gouges and other gruesome makeup effects.  The Friends of the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library provided plenty of liquid latex, theatrical makeup and fake blood for everyone to get their hands dirty. Now they’ll all be ready for next week’s Monster Mash dance and any other haunted festivities they shamble into!

JBK teens kicked off their Summer Reading programs as the first stop for the Tokyo-a-Go-Go teen summer program. The JBK Teen Anime/Manga Club held a special event on June 9, which incorporated wide range of activities, including

Sumo Wrestling photos

Your Name in Japanese

Screening a Few Anime Favorites

We also enjoyed a few Chopstick Races and fun snacks like pocky, fruit jellies and ramen.
Thanks to Youth Services for the fun activity ideas and to the Friends of the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library for their ongoing support for our teen programs!

Liar by Justine Larbalestier

Can you figure it out?

Liar is a gripping fantasy novel that takes you on an insanely confusing, while enjoyable, ride. Meet Micah, an intelligent girl who will tell you straight up that she is a compulsive liar. Walk with her as she tells you the story of her life, taking you on a wild and bumpy road complete with plenty of twists. As each new piece of information is introduced, contradicting the last, you won't be able to resist the urge to sort lie from truth in Micah's words.

Determination sets the tone of this novel as Micah struggles to tell us the truth and figure out who, what, and why she is in life. In this fun and fascinating story, you can't help but think deeper and examine the different aspects of Micah's alleged life, as well as your own. Everybody lies. This is often said, and you will most definitely hear it in Liar.  In reading this novel, Micah may have you questioning yourself. Do you always tell the truth?

All in all, this is a very interesting read that is highly entertaining. Liar will have you tearing through the pages. Two thumbs up to Justine Larbalestier.
